Fucus tomentosus var. fastigiatus Clemente ex Bellón (1942: 11)

Ind. loc.: In Schedae, LXXX card [no number] “ Fucus tomentosus . v. fastigiatus . mi. | Differt à F. tomentoso a dichotomits creberrimis. praesertim versus | apices, diametro ra-morum 3-plo minori, lineam nempe vix superanti, co-| lore in sicco fere atro. | Obs. Utriusque superficies tuberculis obscurioribus, ut apparet seminiferis. | tota fere cooperta interdum observatur. Tubercula ad microscopium pe-| dicellata.” Overleaf: “Frequens ad littus malaccitanum in limo.” ( Bellón 1942: 11).

Lectotype (designated here):– SPAIN. “ Fucus tomentosus . vs. fastigiatus. nova/ En Málaga arraygado en el fango del muelle” [handwritten by Clemente ]. ( GDA 45400 !), see Fig. 2 [photo avaible in “ Tipos nomenclaturales de algas ” at the Herbarium of the University of Granada website: http://herbarium.ugr.es/pages/imagenes/tipos-nomenclaturales/ algas/_img/gda45400/!].

The sheet contains a review label of the Royal Botanic Garden Madrid, stating that it was reviewed by Cremades in 1990. It reads “El ejemplar superior es el LECTOTYPUS de Fucus tomentosus Hudson var. fastigiatus Clemente ex Bellón (1942: 11) ” designating the lectotype in his unpublished doctoral thesis, thus is not validly published. He chooses the top specimen as lectotype (Cremades 1990: 184), “for being the most complete, developed, and more fastigiated habit”.
