Family: Ambassidae View in CoL View at ENA
The glassfishes of Australia and New Guinea were reviewed by Allen and Burgess (1990) who recognised 22 species in four genera. While there are both estuarine and freshwater representatives of the family, four freshwater species have been documented from the Kimberley, although there is some confusion regarding the taxonomic status of the fish previously identified as Ambassis muelleri ( Allen et al. 2002) . In addition, Morgan et al. (2002, 2004a, 2006) and Morgan (in press) reported what appears to be a possible undescribed species from the Fitzroy and King Edward Rivers based on morphological differences with the species previously identified as A. muelleri .
