Alterosa affinis , new species
Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A–E
Alterosa affinis sp. nov. is clearly a member of the A. falcata Group, as defined by Blahnik (2005), by sharing the arched, curved intermediate appendages and a small number of large phallic spines. The new species is closely related to Alterosa falcata Blahnik 2005 . It differs in having the intermediate appendages shorter than the preanal appendages, and in having the crest-like projection on tergum X smaller and more subapical in position. The preanal appendages are more robust in the new species, having the subacuminate projection much more elongate.
Adult. Color (in alcohol) brown; legs, palps, and antennae pale brown, forewings irregularly mottled with pattern of light brown spots between main stems of R and M. Male forewings each 5.8–7.1 mm (n=3).
Male genitalia. Tergum VIII with posteromesal margin deeply emarginate, emargination V-shaped and extending more than halfway to anterior margin. Sternum IX with anterolateral margin broadly rounded; posteroventral margin greatly produced, extending in broad arc or almost linearly from dorsum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A). Tergum IX greatly reduced, membranous or fused to base of tergum X ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B). Tergum X subtriangular, tapered from base in dorsal view; tergum midlaterally with patch of adpressed seta-like spines; dorsally with small preapical projection, forming small prominence as viewed laterally; apex sensillate, rounded ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 1B). Intermediate appendages heavily sclerotized, moderately elongate, not surpassing preanal appendages, sickle-shaped, slightly arched, apex curved downward, acute apically ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 1B). Preanal appendages half as long as tergun X, robust, not greatly modified, constricted basally, with small scant setae and several minute seta-like spines; apex abruptly narrowed, forming long subacuminate projection, without apical setae ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 1B). Inferior appendages elongate, linear, flattened on mesal surface, setose; 1st article, in lateral view, approximately 2 times as long as wide; 2nd article subequal in length to 1st article, relatively narrow, especially at midlength, slightly narrower basally than apex of 1st article; apex rounded, with prominent pad of short, stiff apicomesal setae ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 1C). Phallobase tubular, relatively short and wide, slightly curved near base; endotheca with 7 large sclerotized, nail-like phallic spines; phallotremal sclerites indistinct ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 D, 1E).

Distribution: Brazil (Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states).
Etymology: The epithet of the specific name is from the Latin word affinis (related to, neighboring), referring to the great affinity of the new species to Alterosa falcata .
