Species of both families seem to be declining and have been rarely recorded during our surveys. According to Pekkola (1918) and Sandon (1950), Distichodus and Citharinus were “common everywhere”, abundant on fish markets and reached considerable sizes (e.g.> 50 cm in Distichodus nefasch (Bonnaterre, 1788)) . Nannocharax niloticus (Joannis, 1835) ( Fig. 5 View Figure 5 ) can be confirmed only based on a single specimen from the White Nile on Wad Dakeen Island immediately above the confluence with the Blue Nile in Khartoum.
