Taxonomic note: This species had been considered a subspecies of A. rusticus until Bousquet et al. (2017) formally elevated it to species.
Distribution: NS to central GA to eastern OK to southern MN. Kentucky records are scattered across the state, with most from the Western Allegheny Plateau (Map 011).
Kentucky counties: Christian (1), Estill (1), Jefferson (1), Lee (1), Letcher (1), Powell (3), Rowan (1), Trigg (1)
Years: 1957 (1), 1979 (1), 1981 (1), 2010 (7)
Months: April (1), June (2), July (2), August (1), September (4)
Collections (9 records, 10 specimens): EGCCRC (6), UKIC (4)
Collection methods: Light (1); panel trap baited with α-pinene (6)
Larval host plants: Pinus ( Bousquet et al. 2017)
Chemical lures: Turpentine alone, or in synergy with Trans -verbenol and ethanol ( Fatzinger et al. 1987)— catches can be more than doubled by adding the alcohols.
Comments: Occasionally attracted to lights (see Androw & Keeney 1999). Adults can be found near the bases of dead pines where the larvae mine in their roots ( Craighead 1923).
