TYPE LOCALITY: Madagascar .
DISTRIBUTION: E, NW, and Antsalova Dist. of W Madagascar.
STATUS: CITES - Appendix I; U.S. ESA - Endangered; IUCN - Endangered as H. g. alaotrensis, Insufficiently known as H. g. griseus, Vulnerable as H. g. occidentalis .
SYNONYMS: alaotrensis , cinereus , meridionalis , occidentalis , olivaceus , schlegeli .
COMMENTS: Groves (1989:87) suggested that H. g. alaotrensis may be a full species.
