Key to the macropterous Howickia View in CoL of New Zealand
(Macropterous Howickia differ from other fully winged Sphaeroceridae in New Zealand by the three narrow silver strips on the frons, and by the extremely short, sinuate R2+3).
1 Male sternite 5 with stout teeth along posterior margin; sternite 6 with a simple ventral lobe; sternite 7 with a strongly bifurcate posteroventral lobe ( Fig. 46 View FIGURES 46 – 48 ). Female tergite 7 broadly concave posteriorly; tergite 8 with three long anterior lobes but narrowly complete posteriorly ( Fig. 48 View FIGURES 46 – 48 ). - Male sternite 5 with a small posteromedial comb of flat bristles, posterior margin of sternite 5 without prominent teeth ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 29 – 33 ) but ventral lobe of sternite 6 with prominent posterior processes, posteroventral lobe of sternite 7 simple. Female tergite 7 narrowly split posteriorly and tergite 8 split into three parts, small middle part entirely separate from darker and larger lateral parts ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 29 – 33 ). Apex of female abdomen with a large, dark U-shaped internal sclerite, with arms facing posteriorly ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 29 – 33 )...........................................................................
