Atritermus Belokobylskij, Zaldivar-Riverón & Quicke View in CoL View at ENA NEW GENUS

( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A–B, 2A–B)

Type-species: Atritermus pedestris sp. n.

Diagnosis. Atritermus is similar to the brachypterous, South African genus Neolysitermus but lacks a medioposterior emargination on the third metasomal tergum and has the second and third metasomal terga and vertex almost entirely smooth ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B).

Etymology. From a (not) and Tritermus generic name.

Description. Antennae thick, filiform, 15–18 segmented. Scapus without apical lobe, length 1.8–2.0x its maximum width. First flagellar segment longer than second. Head subcubical. Ocelli very small, in almost equilateral triangle. Frons convex, with small submedian pit. Eyes glabrous, without emargination opposite of antennal sockets. Occipital carina complete, fused with hypostomal carina above base of mandible. Malar suture absent. Tentorial pits large. Clypeal suture distinct and complete. Clypeus with narrow ventral flange.

Hypoclypeal depression large and rounded. Mandible with two teeth. Palpi short; maxillary palpi 6-segmented, labial palpi 4-segmented; fifth segment of maxillary palpus very short, 0.6x as long as sixth segment.

Mesosoma 1.35–1.5x as long as head in lateral view. Pronotal carina more or less distinct, situated in anterior 0.3–0.4 of pronotum. Propleural posterior lobe large. Mesonotum highly and roundly raised above pronotum. Notauli distinct in anterior 0.5–0.6, absent or almost absent in posterior 0.4–0.5. Prescutellar depression deep, wide, and crenulate. Scutellum separate and distinctly convex. Subalar depression shallow and crenulate. Sternauli (precoxal sulcus) crenulate, deep and long. Prepectal carina complete. Metapleural flange short, wide and rounded apically. Propodeum strongly oblique in lateral view, with carinate areola and small lateral tubercles, spiracles small and rounded, propodeal bridge absent. Wings brachypterous, very strongly reduced and oval.

Hind coxa long, without basoventral corner and tooth. All femora without dorsal protuberances. Hind femur distinctly wide. Hind tibial spurs short, inner spur 0.1–0.2x as long as hind basitarsus. Hind basitarsus 0.7x as long as second-fifth hind tarsal segments combined. Claws small.

First metasomal tergum not petiolate, wide and short, strongly and almost perpendicularly abrupted anteriorly and bordered by semicircular carina. Dorsope of first median tergite present but indistinct. Laterope deep and evident. Spiracular tubercles absent, spiracles situated near middle of lateral tergites. Pair of subparallel dorsal carinae present. First tergum moveably joined with second tergum. Second and third terga covering posterior metasomal segments, strongly convex, mostly smooth but partly finely striate laterally, with spiracles situated in median of tergal sides and separated laterogergites (epipleura). Microchetae widely spaced medially and with short sparse recumbent setae laterally and apically on third tergum. Groove between second and third terga wide and shallow. Third tergum with wide smooth posterior flange. Ovipositor straight, much shorter than metasoma, with very small apicodorsal nodus situated far anterior to tip.
