4. Puranoides goemansi View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figures 3 View Figure 3 , 4 View Figure 4 )
Type material
Holotype: male ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 ), central Palawan, northeast of Napsan, 7 km north of Salakot Falls , 850 m, 09°51′ N, 118°37′ E, 13 March 2006, J.H. Lourens ( IRSN) GoogleMaps . Paratypes: one male, three females, same data as holotype ( IRSN) GoogleMaps .
Etymology
The species is named for a colleague of the author, Mr Geert Goemans, who has supported the author in various ways including the arrangement of the loan of specimens.
Measurements of types (two males or three females)
Length of body: male 19.8 (19.7–19.9), female 17.8 (16.4–19.0); length of forewing: male 25.3 (25.2–25.3), female 27.0 (25.8–28.0); width of forewing: male 7.7 (7.6–7.7), female 8.0 (7.4–8.5); width of head including eyes: male 5.8 (5.8–5.8), female 6.2 (5.8–6.4); width of pronotum: male 6.3 (6.2–6.4), female 6.6 (6.3–6.7); width of mesonotum: male 5.4 (5.4–5.4), female 5.6 (5.1–5.9); wingspan: male 55.5 (54.6–56.4), female 58.9 (56.1–61.4).
Diagnosis
This species is distinguished from Puranoides klossi by the slightly swollen male abdomen, with its posterior margins of the tergites 3, 4 and 5 of about the same widths, which are wider than the width of head including compound eyes, but the widths of the posterior margins of tergites 6 and 7 are suddenly reduced.
Description of male ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 )
Ratio of body length to head width about 3.41 (3.40–3.43). Head reddish ochraceous with the following black markings: a median marking enclosing ocelli, with its anterior end reaching frontoclypeal suture and posterior end bifurcate to reach posterior margin of head; a pair of transverse fasciae between postclypeus and compound eyes, extending to supra-antennal plates; a pair of small spots on posterolateral corners of head; and other three to four pairs of irregular-shaped tiny or small spots between the median marking and compound eyes. Distance between lateral ocelli and compound eyes slightly narrower than twice distance between two lateral ocelli. Postclypeus much swollen. Antenna mostly fuscous except brown apical part. Ventral part of head greenish ochraceous to ochraceous with black markings. Postclypeus with a medial longitudinal fascia, bifurcating anteriorly, and five to seven fasciae along transverse grooves anteriorly, of which posterior one to three fasciae are very short. Anteclypeus with a medial longitudinal fascia enclosing an ochraceous tiny spot at about middle. Rostrum black apically; slightly passing posterior margin of hind coxae. Lorum black except rather broad marginal area. Gena with a transverse fascia between postclypeus and compound eye.
Pronotum greenish ochraceous to ochraceous. Inner area of pronotum with the following black markings: a pair of medial longitudinal fasciae broadened at anterior ends; a pair of short, oblique branches from middle of the medial longitudinal fasciae along paramedian fissures; a pair of obliquely longitudinal small fasciae between median parts of paramedian fissures and posterior ends of lateral fissures; a pair of small spots on anterior part of paramedian fissures; a pair of fasciae along lateral fissures; and a pair of curved fasciae along lateral margins of inner area. Pronotal collar with a narrow transverse fascia along posterior margin and a pair of small spots at lateral corners. Anterolateral pronotal collar not dentate.
Mesonotum greenish ochraceous to ochraceous with the following black markings: a median longitudinal fascia slightly broadened posteriorly to reach anterior margin of cruciform elevation; a pair of small roundish spots enclosing scutal depressions; a pair of inwardly curved markings along parapsidal sutures; and a pair of longitudinal fasciae on lateral sigilla, with their anterior ends reaching anterior margin of mesonotum and posterior ends slightly curved laterad. Cruciform elevation greenish ochraceous to ochraceous with fuscous anterior subapical parts. Ventral part of thorax ochraceous with patches on basisternum 2 and episterna 2 and 3.
Legs greenish ochraceous to ochraceous. Fore-femur with a small subapical spine as well as primary and secondary spines, all fuscous, and a fuscous fascia along midline of ventral side. Fore-tibia and tarsus mostly brown, except metatarsus, mesotarsus and about apical one-third of pretarsus, fuscous to dark brown. Mid-tibia and tarsus mostly brown, except metatarsus, mesotarsus and about apical half of pretarsus, fuscous to dark brown. Hind tibia and tarsus mostly brown. Fore-, mid- and hind pretarsal claws brown with fuscous apical part.
Wings hyaline. Forewing vein R + Sc mostly reddish ochraceous. Forewing with a distinct infuscation at bases of apical cells 2 and 3. Base of ulnar cell 1 with black node. Basal membrane and hindwing jugum greyish ochraceous.
Operculum greenish ochraceous to ochraceous with narrowly black lateral margin; nearly transverse parallelogram-shaped with posterior angles rounded; short, not reaching posterior margin of sternite II. Lateral margin of operculum sinuate at base. Two opercula wide apart from each other.
Abdomen much longer than distance from head to cruciform elevation; mostly brown with narrowly black caudal margin on each tergite. Tergite 2 with a medial longitudinal fuscous fascia or roundish spot. Tergites 7 and 8 each with a transverse patch anteriorly. Tergites 3 and 4 each with a pair of rather indistinct submarginal small fuscous spots. Tergite 6 with a pair of marginal black roundish spots, fused with posterior margin. Posterior margin of tergite 3 wider than anterior margin of mesonotum. Timbal cover greenish ochraceous to ochraceous; semicircular, about as long as wide. Timbal mostly concealed by timbal cover in dorsal view. Ventral part of abdomen mostly dark ochraceous except mostly fuscous sternite VII. Sternite II margined with fuscous. Sternite VIII with a medial longitudinal fuscous fascia.
Male genitalia ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 ): pygofer oval with apical part considerably narrowed in ventral view. Uncus simple, wide, with blunt bicuspid apex in ventral view. Upper lobe of pygofer small, with recurved rounded apex. Dorsal beak long, slender, about as long as anal styles. Basal lobe of pygofer absent.
Description of female
Ratio of body length to head width about 2.87 (2.81–2.97). Operculum greenish ochraceous with fuscous posterolateral margin and an antero-inner patch; not reaching posterior margin of sternite II. Anterior margin of operculum narrower than posterior margin. Ventral part of abdomen ochraceous with fuscous fasciae along posterior margin of each of sternites III–VII and epipleurites 3–7. Sternite VII with a median fuscous spot. Abdominal segment 9 ochraceous dorsally with fuscous anterior margin and a pair of longitudinal fuscous lateral fasciae on about anterior twothirds and ventrally with a medial large fuscous patch posteriorly. Ovipositor sheath black; extending beyond anal styles. Dorsal beak about as long as protruding part of ovipositor sheath.
