Garra rufa gymnothorax Berg View in CoL [L. S.] 1949: 792; Type locality: Tigris River, Iran. Syntypes: ZIN 13214–15 (6, 6+), plus additional specimen 24429 (1), 24435–36 (10, 3).
Common name: Pr: Gel cheraghe shekam berahne, En: Chest scaleless garra.
Diagnosis: The breast is naked or with embedded scales, belly and predorsal mid-dorsal line covered by scales, eye placed in posterior half of head, usually 8 branched dorsal fin rays, and usually 9 + 8 caudal fin rays.
Meristic characters: D: III 7–8 (8), A: III 5, P: 14–17, V: 8, GR: 17–20, LL: 32–38, TV: 33–37.
Distribution: Tigris basin ( Fig. 121). Found in Karun River system in the Helayjan River at Izeh, Balarud River at Andimeshk and Bashar River at Yasouj.
Taxonomy: Coad (1991) synonymized with Garra rufa ( Heckel 1843) but Esmaeili et al. (2016b) give it full species rank.
Conservation: IUCN: Not Evaluated, PC: Least Concern. This is a widespread and ubiquitous species and its populations occur in high population sizes in the Tigris basin. Therefore, we classified it as Least Concern.
