( Figs. 16 A–E; 20 G–H; 23)
Edessa tragelaphus Breddin, 1903: 139 ; Bergroth, 1908: 179; Kirkaldy, 1909: 165 (catalog); Froeschner, 1981: 67.
Edessa pachyacantha Breddin, 1904a: 136 ; Bergroth, 1908: 179; Kirkaldy, 1909: 161 (catalog) syn. nov.
Lectotype female. Edessa tragelaphus . Ecuador, Coca, leg. Haensch ( SDEI). Designated by Gaedike (1971: 101, by use of “ Holotypus ”). Examined.
Lectotype male. Edessa pachyacantha . Peru, Marcapata ( SDEI). Designated by Gaedike (1971: 94). Examined. Gaedike also indicated one paralectotype female from the same locality.
Material examined. PERU. Loreto: 2♀ ♂ Confl. de Los Rios Zumun e Yahuasyaw, II–80, J. Becker leg., Edessa tragelaphus Breddin, 1903 Comp. w. TYPE Fernandes, JAM 1999. Edessa pachyacantha Breddin, 1904 Comp. w. TYPE Fernandes, JAM 1999 ( RMNH) ; ♂ E. Le Moult. Iquitos April. S. Roque. Edessa pachyacantha Breddin, 1904 Comp. w. TYPE. Fernandes, JAM 1999 ( RMNH) ; ♀ 80km NE Iquitos, 1km from Amazon River on Rio Yana- mono, Explorama Lodge, 1–5–IX–1992, Castner, Skelley, et al. ( JEE)
Measurements. total length: 17.5–18.3; head length: 2.2–2.3; head width: 3.3–3.4; pronotal width: 12.1–13.6; abdominal width: 9.0–9.7; length of antennal segments. I: 0.5–0.6; II: 1.1–2.3; III: 1.4–1.7; IV: 3.7–5.0; V: 3.6–5.0; interocular distance: 1.4–1.7; scutellum length: 7.6–8.8; scutellum width: 5.6–6.1; pronotal length: 3.6–4.2.
Diagnosis. Anterolateral margin of pronotum without solid black stripe, more concave than the other species, impunctate. Humeral angle with apex globose and solid black ( Fig. 20G). Connexivum with small green spots. Anterolateral margin more concave than the other species. Anterolateral margin not puncture. Scutellum with anterior margin concolorous ( Fig. 20G). Ventrally apex of pseudosutures without rounded dark spots ( Fig. 20H). Male ( Fig. 16 A–C). Pygophore with dorsal rim shallowly concave; lateral strongly projected posteriorly, surpassing posterolateral angles and expansions of ventral rim ( Fig. 16A,B). Paramere with anterior lobe shorter than posterior lobe; posterior lobe tongue-like. Proctiger with tufts of setae narrowly separated dorsally; posterior face subrectangular ( Fig. 16B). Ventral rim with expansion little developed, barely tumid, and acuminate ( Fig. 16C). Female ( Fig. 16D). Gonocoxites 8 inner angle reaching middle of gonocoxites 9. Laterotergites 9 narrow, clearly surpassing sclerite uniting laterotergites 8.
Comments. Breddin (1903) related E. tragelaphus to E. nigrispina . When analyzing the general external morphology, H. tragelaphus has humeral angles of pronotum well developed, globose and slightly posteriorly directed ( Fig. 20G), while E. nigrispina has apex acute and strongly curved posteriorly. The shape of the humeral angles also distinguishes this species from the others of the group H. oxyacanthus .
