AENEAS LINNAEUS OF CRAMER, 1780 View in CoL
Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Troj[anus] aeneas, Cramer, 1780a: 155 , 173, pl.279, figs A, B, C, D [original plate 248 figs B, B, C, C] [N.B: pl. 279, figs A, B (= original pl. 248, figs B, B) are misidentified and represent Parides neophilus (Geyer) ]. Surinam; ‘mais on pourroit douter fort, si elle a été jamais trouvée en Asie, à ce que prétend Mr. Linnaeus’ [but we strongly doubt if it is ever found on Asia as Mr. Linnaeus claimed].
Papilio Eques View in CoL Trojanus aeneas, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 37].
Material examined. 1♂, with van Lennep label ‘No.37. AENEAS. Cr. III. 279. A. B. C. D.’ and Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665024) is a good match for original plate 248, figs. C, C . 2 ♂♂ with Felder labels ‘ Surinam Coll. Eyndhoven’ ( BMNH (E)#665130–1) also match original plate 248, figs. C, C quite well although with less elongate spots on hindwing .
2 ♂♂ with Felder labels ‘ Surinam Coll. Eyndhoven’ ( BMNH (E)#665021,665023) , 1 ♂ with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665020) and 1 ♂, no data except label ‘N’ or ‘Z’ (a similar label on one van Eyndhoven specimen) ( BMNH (E)#665022) are a fair match for original plate 248, figs B, B ( BMNH (E)#665020 is best). All these specimens appear to have been re-pinned and have been repaired, including being touched up with paint .
Identity. Specimens 665024 and 665120–1 are Parides aeneas (Linnaeus, 1758) ; specimens 665020–3 are Parides neophilus (Geyer, 1837) .
