ULYSSES LINNAEUS OF CRAMER, 1777 View in CoL

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Troj[anus] ulysses, Cramer, 1777: 37 , 151 [indexed as ulisses, incorrect subsequent spelling], pl.121, figs A, B [original plate 100, figs A, A]. Moluccas (figured specimen from ‘Isle d’Amboine’ [= Indonesia, Ambon]).

Papilio Eques Achivus View in CoL ulisses, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 5] (incorrect subsequent spelling).

Material examined. 1 ♂, with van Lennep label ‘ No. 5. ULISSES. Cr. II. 121. A. B.’ is a good match for original plate 100, figs A, A. ( BMNH (E)#665048); it has been re-pinned. There is also a possible Cramer specimen in RNHL .

Identity. Papilio (Achillides) u. ulysses Linnaeus, 1758 .

VERTUMNUS CRAMER, 1779 View in CoL

( FIG. 23 View Figures 21–26 )

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Troj[anus] vertumnus Cramer, 1779: 32 , 176, pl.211, figs A, B, C [original plate 180, figs A, A, B]. Surinam, ‘ou ils ne sont cependant pas fort communs’ [where, however, it is not very common] (figured from C.Stoll’s collection).

Papilio Eques View in CoL Trojanus vertumnus, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 36].

Material examined. Syntype ♂, with van Lennep label ‘ No. 36. VERTUMNUS Cr. III. 211. A. B. C. ’ and Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665197); it has been re-pinned and had a few repairs and touches of paint, but is a good match for original plate 180, figs A, A. There are 2 ♂ syntypes, each with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’. One ( BMNH (E)#665016) is a good match for original plate 180, figs A, A; it has thoracic damage but may retain its original pin, it has also lost its abdomen and has received extensive repairs; the second ( BMNH (E)#665017) is much smaller; it has a stouter pin and has probably been re-pinned and has some repairs to the wings. There are also 2 ♂ [? syntypes, BMNH (E)#665015/8] and 1 ♀ ( BMNH (E)#665019) with Felder labels ‘ Surinam Coll. Eyndh [oven]’; the latter bears no resemblance to the figured ‘female’ on original plate 180, fig. B. One of the van Eyndhoven males has been re-pinned, but not the other .

Current status. Valid species in Parides ( Häuser et al., 2003) .
