THOAS LINNAEUS OF CRAMER, 1777

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] thoas, Cramer, 1777: 108 , 151, pl.167, figs A, B [original plate 135, figs A, A]. ‘Ils sont fort communs à Suriname’ [it is very common in Surinam].

Papilio Eques Achivus thoas, Stoll, 1782b: 3 [No. 37].

Material examined. 1 ♂, 2 ♀, each with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665054–6) are all a fair match for original plate 135, figs A, A – the male is particularly good; all three have been re-pinned and they have been repaired and touched with paint. There are also 2 ♀, no data, ex Felder collection ( BMNH (E)#665057–8) that match the plate less well . 1 ♀ with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Walcheren’ ( BMNH (E)#665389) is quite a good match for original plate 135, figs A, A [Walcheren’s collection was included in the sale of van Eyndhoven’s collection and there may be the possibility of mislabelling] .

Papilio Eques Achivus torquatus, Stoll, 1782b: 3 [No. 28].

Material examined. Syntype ♂ with Felder label ‘Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665118) is a good match for original plate 141, figs A, A; it has been repinned; there are some repairs, especially to the hindwing tails. Rothschild & Jordan (1906) cite this specimen, stating ‘there is in the Tring Museum from the old collection of Lennep a male which agrees with Cramer’s figure, and is probably the type. This figure has several characteristic features, which are also found in that specimen. The band of the forewing is rather narrower than usually in the present subspecies; the spots at the upper angle of the cell are small; the submarginal spots of the hindwing, on upperside, are comparatively large; and the apex of the cell I more extended black on underside than is usually the case’ .

Current status. Valid species in Papilio (Heraclides) ( Häuser et al., 2003) .
