PANTHONUS CRAMER, 1780

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] panthonus Cramer, 1780a: 154 , 176, pl.278, figs C, D [original plate 247, figs C, C]. Original plate 349, figs A, A, is possibly a second and less good rendering of this species, but is not captioned and was not included in the published volumes. Surinam.

Papilio Eques Trojanus panthonus, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 43].

Material examined. Possible syntype ♀ with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ and van Lennep label ‘No.43. PANTHONUS Cr. III. 278. C. D.’ ( BMNH (E)#665039); the thorax is squashed and has been re-pinned, the wings have been touched up with paint. It is a fair match for original plate 247, figs C, C, but has the spots on the underside hindwing more elongate. There are two other possible ♀ syntypes: one with Felder label ‘ Surinam, Coll Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#66204) and the other with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Eyndhoven’ and a printed Felder label ‘ panthonus Cram. ’ ( BMNH (E)#665205); both have been re-pinned and had repairs and touches of paint; both are a reasonable match for original plate 247, figs C, C, though the van Lennep specimen is slightly better .

Current status. Valid species in Parides ( Häuser et al., 2003) .
