DOLICAON CRAMER, 1775 View in CoL

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] dolicaon Cramer, 1775: 25 , 152, pl. 17, figs C, D [original plate 8, figs B, B]. ‘Ce Page extraordinaire se trouve rarement dans le Cabinets des curieux.’ [this extraordinary butterfly is found rarely in the cabinets of curiosities] ‘Indies Orientales’ [error, prob. Surinam].

Papilio Eques Achivus View in CoL doliciaon, Stoll, 1782b: 3 [No. 43], incorrect subsequent spelling.

Material examined. Possible syntype ♂ ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665060) is a good match for original plate 8, figs B, B; it has been re-pinned and the hindwings have undergone some repairs. There is also a syntype in Museum für Naturkunde, Humboldt- Universität, Berlin. It is labelled ‘ Dolicaon / Original zu/ Cram [1]7 cd,/teste Maassen. /ex coll. Mus. Leyden’. This specimen was illustrated by Tyler et al. (1994) and cited as a type .

Current status. Valid species in Eurytides ( Häuser et al., 2003) .

DRUSIUS CRAMER, 1779

( FIG. 9 View Figures 9–14 )

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] drusius Cramer, 1779: 63– 64 , 174, pl.229, fig. A, pl.230, fig. A [original plates 198, fig. A, pl. 199, fig. A]. ‘Isle d’Amboine’ [= Indonesia, Ambon] (Willem V, Prince of Orange and Nassau).

Papilio Eques Trojanus View in CoL drusius, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 10].

Material examined. Syntype ♀ ( BMNH (E)#665120) with partly trimmed label (in unknown hand) ‘ ♀ P. Gambris[ius] Drusius Cr Typus Cram Coll. Eyndh’; upperside is a fairly good match for original plate 198, fig. A, and underside is a good match for original plate 199, fig. A. The thorax is badly damaged and may have been re-pinned; the wings have had extensive repairs and the left hindwing is badly damaged.

Remarks. Rothschild (1895) states ‘in the Felderian collection are a male and a female labelled “ Type, Cramer, coll. Lennep”; these specimens agree well with Cramer’s figures [of drusius and gambrisius], but I must doubt that they really are Cramer’s types; Cramer mentions sometimes the collection of Lennep, and some of Lennep’s specimens are indeed figured by Cramer; but most of Lennep’s specimens, which Felder obtained at a sale in Holland, do not exactly agree with Cramer’s figures of the respective species.’ It seems a little strange to reject these specimens as possible types because they agree with Cramer’s figures!

Current status. Junior subjective synonym of Papilio (Menelaides) gambrisius Cramer, 1777 ( Bridges, 1988) .
