Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] nicippe Cramer, 1779: 31 , 176, pl.210, figs C, D [original plate 179, figs B, B]. Virginia (Cornelis van Lennep).
Papilio View in CoL Danaus View in CoL Candidus nicippe, Stoll, 1782b: 5 [No. 29].
Material examined. There is one specimen with van Lennep label ‘No. 29. NICIPPE . Cr. III. 210. C. D.’ ( BMNH (E)#665080); it has been re-pinned. Although the upperside is a good match for original plate 179, fig. B, the underside is of the seasonal form with much redder hindwings and tips to the forewings. However, there are two specimens ex Felder collection ( BMNH (E)#665378–9), but without data, that may well be syntypic. Each of these specimens is a better match for original plate 179, fig. B, and given that nicippe was described from material in van Lennep’s collection it is very likely that the van Lennep label has been misassociated .
Current status. Valid species in Abaeis ( Lamas, 2004b) .
