Description of gonopod. Straight in mesiocaudal view. Marginal suture on mesial side, straight; marginal process rounded, not produced beyond distal border of apex, strongly bent to cephalic side. Mesial process large, subrectangular, ax-shaped. Lateral process long, approximately 60–70% of stem length (from proximal opening to caudal border of apex), clearly bilobed, lobes strongly asymetric, with distinct median concavity on caudal surface; lateral border with distinct median incision; proximal lobe slightly angled, distinctly smaller than distal lobe, with few to several scattered minute setae on caudal, lateral surfaces; distal lobe broadly rounded, usually tranversal, slightly thicker distally on cephalic surface, wider than lateral end of apex. Distocaudal ridge long (nearly reaching level of median depression of lateral process), narrow, well separated from the distal border of lateral process by distinct depression. Apex bent approximately 90° towards lateral side; oblong, narrow in distal view; caudal border with narrow notch near lateral end. Field of apical spines well developed, facing towards cephalolateral side.

Holotype and type locality. Male, cw 30.7, cl 18.1, USNM 19047. Costa Rica, San José Province, La Mina, Torres River , [a tributary of the Virilla River, probably near San José, 09°56’N, 84°05’W, according to Smalley (1964b)], north of San José (Pacific drainage).

Distribution. Central and southeastern Costa Rica, Alajuela, San José, and Puntarenas Provinces, Pacific drainage ( Fig. 83 View FIGURE 83 ). Garcés (2002) reported the occurrence of Ptychophallus tristani (as Pseudothelphusa tristani ) from the San Félix River basin (Chiriquí Province, Panamá), but we were not able to confirm the identification of the specimens as they are no longer extant (H.A. Garcés, pers. comm. to CM). Another unconfirmed record of P. tristani from Panama was made from Fortuna Lake (Chiriquí River, Chiriquí Province) ( Anonymous 2005).

Remarks. Ptychophallus campylus was described by Pretzmann (1968) from a single male with a G1 closely resembling that of P. tristani in each having a large, subrectangular mesial process and asymmetrical lateral process. In P. c a m p yl us, however, the lateral process is narrower than the lateral end of the apex, and the distal lobe is not distinctly larger than the proximal one ( Fig. 41 View FIGURES 33 – 43 ). Similar condition was also noticed in some other specimens (e.g. INPA 1853, Fig. 42 View FIGURES 33 – 43 ; INPA 1851, Fig. 43 View FIGURES 33 – 43 ; lot UCR-MZ 717 has one male with rather narrow distal lobe but it is wider in the remaining males). We prefer to consider P. campylus as a junior synonym of P. tristani for the time being because such differences could be due to intraspecific variation, but a reassessment of its taxonomic status might be necessary if additional collections indicate otherwise.
