Type. Holotype male, collected in “ Cuba ” and deposited in BMNH, former Alexander Fry collection.

Redescription. 17–42 mm. Male: Overall coloration from very dark brown to black, with feeble metallic blue-green reflections. Both antennae and legs black, the latter sometimes very dark brown with red tinge (tinge also seen in parts of ventral surface, mainly thorax). Head punctate except at central groove. Antennae medium sized, reaching or surpassing midpoint of elytra. Pronotum strongly punctate to roughened, transversely depressed at base, narrower than elytra, with 2 spines on each side, mediolateral spine longer. Scutellum glabrous, rounded at apex and with few punctures. Elytra glabrous, roughened at base and densely punctate on remaining surface; apical margin slightly denticulate with small epipleural and sutural teeth. Prosternal process smooth, weekly punctate, notched at apex, and with a small anterior tubercle. Abdominal ventrites I–IV piceous, glabrous, with few, sparse punctures; ventrite V weakly punctate and with some setae at sides. Female: Very similar to male, but with shorter antennae, not reaching midpoint of elytra.

Remarks. Lameere (1909) examined the type deposited in the British Museum, but erroneously stated that it was captured in Haiti; it is clear that he was speaking about the same specimen because he also mentioned the length: 24 mm. Subsequently, various authors (Leng and Mutchler 1914; Blackwelder 1946; Chemsak et al. 1992; Monné 1995, 2016) have copied the same mistake and recorded Cuba and Haiti (Hispaniola) as the distribution area of the species. Russo (1930) cited one specimen from the Dominican Republic, but he did not included any collecting locality, and none since have been collected on the island. Based on this evidence, Lingafelter (2015) suggested that this species cannot be confirmed to occur in Hispaniola until new captures have been made. For the time being, D. anthracinus is considered an endemic species from Cuba.
