Type species. Proprioseius meridionalis Chant, 1957: 358 .

Main distinguishing characteristics. Dorsal shield irregularly rugose to reticulate; species so far reported from Brazil with a variously shaped elevation between j6 and Z4. Idiosomal setal pattern 10A:6E/JV-3:ZV (J2, S2 and S4 absent); setae s4, Z4 and Z5 distinctly stout, serrate and usually longer than other setae. Sternal shield usually lightly sclerotised. Ventrianal shields vase-shaped; Jv 1 usually close to anterior shield margin; in several species, pre-anal setae of each side almost in longitudinal line. Spermathecal calyx cup- or disc-shaped (cone-shaped in P. schichai Corpuz-Raros ). Fixed and movable cheliceral digits with 5–8 and 2–3 teeth, respectively. Leg macrosetae absent or present only on tarsus IV. Male ventrianal shield with three pairs of pre-anal setae arranged in a triangular pattern, or with four pairs; spermadactyl type heel-and-toe or L-shaped .

Remarks. The seta indicated by Moraes & Denmark (1999) and Zacarias & Moraes (2001b) as S2 should be interpreted as Z1, as proposed by Chant & McMurtry (2003b) and as accepted in this publication. Three of the ten species presently included in this genus have been reported from Brazil, each in only one occasion. Worldwide, species of this genus have been reported from plants.
