Hylastes angustatus (Herbst, 1793) View in CoL
Distribution in Iran. East Azarbaijan ( Samin et al. 2011).
General distribution. Europe, East to Caucasus. Introduced into South Africa.
Biology. This species breeds primarily on species of Pinus (Pinaceae) , but is occasionally found on Picea (Pinaceae) . In Iran it is recorded from Picea orientalis ( Samin et al. 2011) . It attacks the base of the trunk and the large roots of stressed or fallen trees ( Balachowsky 1949; Tribe 1990a, 1992). Further details of the biology, seasonal history and aggregation behaviour are given by Chararas (1962), Tribe (1990a, 1992), Erasmus and Chown (1994) and Fernandez (1997). Economic damage may occur through maturation feeding by recently emerged adults on pine seedlings ( Erasmus & Chown 1994).
