STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Watson (1991: 648). Also recorded as Stenogobius laterisquamatus (non Weber, 1908) by Watson (1991: 601); previously reported as Stenogobius genivattatus (non Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1837) by Kailola (1975: 217). AMS and KFRS material.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Endemic to northern Papua New Guinea. Found on sand or sand-gravel bottom of freshwater creeks; larvae in adjacent marine habitats, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Found in silty or sandy areas of lagoons and bays, usually in pairs and lives in a burrow under rocks, 0– 10 m. Marine.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line, Society and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe Island, and Tonga. Found in clear outer lagoon and seaward coral or rocky reefs, over hard bottoms as well as over sand and rubble; usually in pairs, hovering near their burrow, 0– 24 m. Marine.

Found on coral rubble bottom on the barrier reef slope, 9– 60 m. Marine.
