Sphyraena barracuda (Edwards in Catesby, 1771) —Great barracuda

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed at St. CTR 23, CTR 26. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. In all tropical seas except the eastern Pacific; in the western Pacific Ocean south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Juveniles occur in estuaries and shallow sheltered inner reef areas; adults are found in a wide range of habitats from murky inner harbours to open seas, 1– 100 m. Transitional water and marine.

Sphyraena jello Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1829 —Pickhandle barracuda ( Fig. 27 )

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Herre (1933: 12). Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 16, CTR 20, CTR 24. AMS and SU material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Tonga, south to New Caledonia. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs, including bays and estuaries, 2– 200 m. Transitional water and marine.

Sphyraena obtusata Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1829 —Obtuse barracuda

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed at St. CTR 17. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Samoa, north to southern Japan and Korea, south to Lord Howe Island. Found in bays and estuaries, in seagrass beds and rocky reefs, 10– 120 m. Transitional water and marine.

Sphyraena qenie Klunzinger, 1870 —Blackfin barracuda

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed by G. R. Allen. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to Queensland ( Australia). Found in schools above seaward coral reefs, 2– 50 m. Marine.
