Scatophagus argus (Linné, 1766) —Spotted scat
STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed by P. Laboute at Madang on 4 Dec. 2012. AMS, CAS and USNM material (AMS I.1670 -005, I.16747-013, I.17084-009; CAS 63217; USNM 385537).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Persian Gulf and India east to Caroline Islands and Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in silty bays, harbours and mangrove estuaries, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed by G. R. Allen. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll and Pitcairn, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia, New Caledonia and Rapa. Found on coastal and inner reef slopes and lagoons, 0– 40 m. Marine.
Siganus corallinus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1835) —Coral rabbitfish
STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Woodland (1990: 27); a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen on Madang Market, another photographed by A. Berberian. AMS, NTUM and USNM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Seychelles and Maldives east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Adults occurring in pairs in coral-rich areas of coral reefs, juveniles in seagrass habitats, 1– 30 m. Marine.
Siganus doliatus Guérin-Méneville, 1829 –1838 —Barred rabbitfish
STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed by G. R. Allen, and AMS material (AMS I.17089-011).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Palau, Fiji and Tonga, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in sheltered coastal reefs and on seaward reef slopes, 0– 15 m. Marine.
Siganus fuscescens (Houttuyn, 1782) —Mottled spinefoot
STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed by A. Berberian. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Pohnpei ( Caroline Islands) and Solomon Islands, north to southern Japan and Korea, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in algae and seagrass flats in lagoons and near coastal reefs, 2– 50 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen on 8 Dec. 2012. NTUM material (NTUM 10181).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Maldives and Sri Lanka; Eastern Indonesia east to Palau, Yap, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, north to Philippines, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in lagoons and coastal reefs, including mangrove habitats, 0– 25 m. Transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 0 3, CTR 0 7, CTR 0 8, CTR 0 9, CTR 10, CTR 13, CTR 14, CTR 15, CTR 16, CTR 22, CTR 26, CTR 28, PR 126, PR 248. AMS material (AMS I.17089-045).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Cocos-Keeling Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Marshall Islands and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coralrich areas of coral reefs, 1– 30 m. Marine.
Siganus punctatissimus Fowler & Bean, 1929 —Fine-spotted rabbitfish
STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on BPBM material (BPBM 15808). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Palau and Solomon Islands, north to Taiwan and Yaeyama Islands, south to northern Australia. Usually in pairs, in coastal reefs, often near steep slopes, 3– 30 m. Marine.
Siganus punctatus (Schneider [ex Forster] in Bloch & Schneider, 1801) —Gold-spotted rabbitfish STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on a specimen photgraphed by P. Laboute at Tab Island on 26 Nov. 2012, another collected by W.-J. Chen on Madang Market. NTUM material (NTUM 10180). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Cocos-Keeling Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Marshall Islands, Tonga and Samoa, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. In pairs, living in coral reefs, 1– 40 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Woodland (1990: 33). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Sri Lanka and Andaman Sea east to Marshall and Society islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found on coastal reef flats and seaward coral reefs, 0– 50 m. Marine.
Siganus vermiculatus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1835) —Vermiculated rabbitfish STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Woodland (1990: 101). AMS and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. India and Sri Lanka east to Caroline Islands and Fiji, north to Philippines, south to New Guinea. Found in sheltered coral reefs and shallow brackish estuaries, 0– 20 m. Transitional water and marine.

Chen on Madang Market. AMS, NTUM and USNM material (AMS I.17088-053; NTUM 10182; USNM 235328).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia east to Caroline Islands and Vanuatu, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coral-rich areas, among staghorn corals in lagoons and seaward coral reefs, 1– 30 m. Marine.
