Poeciloterpa atra Jacobi, 1927 View in CoL
( Figs 11–25 View FIGURES 11–18 View FIGURES 19–25 )
Poeciloterpa atra Jacobi, 1927: 550 View in CoL ; Lallemand 1949: 86.
Jacobi (1927) described this species based on 2 female specimens. The description was mainly based on the coloration.
During our field trips in the Philippines, we collected Poeciloterpa specimens in copula in Saray, Pakil, UP Laguna Land Grant, Laguna. The general colour of the female in copula is black while the male is red. When following the identification key of Lallemand (1949) the male and female are identified as being two different species, P. atra and Poeciloterpa minuta Lallemand , respectively. After dissection of the male terminalia, we compared them with those of the male paratype of P. minuta deposited in the NHM. The genitalia are different and the specimens collected in copula do not belong to P. minuta .
The type locality of P. atra is the Polillo Island in which we collected some material. All the females collected there were black and the males were red ( Figs 15–17 View FIGURES 11–18 ). The females from Polillo Island including the type ( Figs 11–13 View FIGURES 11–18 ), deposited in SMTD, and the female in copula from Pakil are morphologically similar. The males collected on Polillo and the male in copula from Pakil present the same genitalia. All these observations lead us to think that a dimorphism in coloration can be observed for the species P. atra . As such, we provide here for the first time, the detailed description and illustration of male terminalia ( Figs 19–24 View FIGURES 19–25 ).
Male terminalia ( Figs 19–24 View FIGURES 19–25 ). In lateral view, pygofer ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 19–25 ) dorsal margin longer than ventral margin, dorsal margin slightly convex at anterior 1/3 then gently concave at posterior 2/3, ventral margin almost straight, posterior margin largely curved at dorsal 1/3, convex in the middle and finishing like a process ventrally, posterodorsal angle nearly acute. Subgenital plate, on ventral view ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 19–25 ) almost parallel on 2/3 of their length then converging and crossing each other, apex pointed; in lateral view ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 19–25 ), subgenital plate regularly tapering towards apex, curving dorsally then slightly ventrally at apex, covered with hairs on ventral half from basal to apical area; lateral plate roughly ovoid with anteroventral part narrower than posterodorsal one. Paramere, in lateral view ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 19–25 ) dorsal margin largely concave subapically, slightly angular in middle and ventral margin straight subapically and rounded in middle, posterodorsal angle rounded without spine-like process, set of very short and scarce setae located on angular dorsal margin and rounded ventral margin. Aedeagus ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 19–25 ) with apical extension sharp in apex curling towards ventral direction, posterior protrusion hook-shaped.
