TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Pedemontii alpibus [Piedmont Alps ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (hypopygium, fifth and sixth segments on two separate slides) ( MZUF: Box 23): Chorthophila Mcq. / incognita Rnd., Alpi / 1224 / Pegohylemyia gnava Meigen = Chortophila incognita Rondani , Holotypus [sic!].

Hypopygium on slide n° 14 (Box Diptera Rondani 1): Pegohylemyia gnava (Meigen) , coll. Rondani, N° 1224, Mus. Florenz / Pegohylemyia gnava (Meig.) , ♂, Hypopygium.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Botanophila gnava ( Meigen, 1826) View in CoL ( Dely-Draskovits 1993: 26, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 5).
REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 168) described Chorthophila incognita from two males: “ Exemplaria duo mascula inveni in collect. Mussino [I found two males in Mussino’s collection]”. We found just one male in the MZUF, which Hennig (1970a: 374) considered as the “Typen” [= type] and therefore implicitly designated it as the lectotype, even though he incorrectly labeled it “ holotypus ” (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.5). Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Chorthophila , which is an “unjustified emendation of Chortophila Macquart, 1835 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 57).
