Corthophila palpella Rondani, 1871 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1871a: 328.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ In Alpibus [Alps]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Egle ciliata (Walker, 1849) View in CoL ( Dely-Draskovits 1993: 51, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 6).

REMARKS: Rondani (1871a: 328) described both sexes of Corthophila palpella , from an unspecified number of specimens received from L. Bellardi. Rondani (1877c: 219) considered Chorthophila palpella Rndn. (var.) as a synonym of Chortophila muscaria ( Meigen, 1826) . We were unable to locate any type material of this nominal species in our study. Hennig (1967a: 142) did not report any type for C. palpella in the MZUF and, in fact, there is the cardboard label “ Chorthophila Mcq. palpella Rnd. ♂, Pedem. [= Piedmont]” in the MZUF (Box 23) without any specimens or even pinholes to prove that they were ever there. There is, however, a male (nontype) numbered “1231” under the name “ Chorthophila muscaria Mgn ”, labeled “Parma”, which is not the type locality. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Corthophila ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Chortophila Macquart, 1835 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 65).
