ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1878a: 153.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in America meridionale et media [in South and Central America]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, lectotype ( MZUF: Box 66): Lipoptena mazamae n. / 3385 / holotype [sic!] Lipoptena mazamae Rndn. , ♀, T. C. Maa, [19]62 .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Bequaert 1965: 920, Guimarães 1968a: 9).

REMARKS: Rondani (1878a: 153) described Lipoptena mazamae from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths: “ Mas … non cognitus [male sex … unknown]”, from material received from L. Bellardi. Maa (1963: 45) designated a lectotype (♀).
