(= batchiana Rndn. = australis Guér. ), ♀, T. C. Maa, [19]62.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Ornithoctona plicata Olfers, 1816 ( Maa 1989a: 787) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani (1878a: 158) described Ornithomyia batchiana from two specimens: “ Exemplar unum Musei Civici Januensis … lectum fuit a Cl. L. M. D’Albertis, et aliud collectionis Bellardi [one specimen in the Genova Civic Museum collected … by Mr. L.M. D’Albertis, and another in Bellardi’s collection]”. Rondani attributed the species name to Bellardi. It is not listed by Guiglia (1957) but is by Raineri and Rey (1996: 37). Maa (1963: 18) designated a lectotype (♀) in the MSNG and stated: “ syntypes from the Philippines mentioned in original description, collected by Semper, listed later by Osten Sacken (1882: 246) not seen by me, possibly in Berlin Mus.”. The Semper collection is either in the MNHUB or the NHRS ( Horn et al., 1990). No specimen under the name Ornithomya batchiana is present in either the MNHUB (J. Ziegler, pers. comm., 2013) or the NHRS (Y. Brodin, pers. comm., 2013). We found just the female lectotype, the second specimen is presumed lost. An additional MSNG female from “Nuova Guinea, Andai” is not included in the type series because it is not from the type locality. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Ornithomyia ”, which is an “incorrect subsequent spelling of Ornithomya Latreille, 1804 or subsequent usage of Ornithomyia Agassiz, 1846 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 133).
