CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Sarcophaga (Helicophagella) noverca View in CoL ( Verves 1986: 138, Pape 1988: 12, Pape et al. 1995: 14, Pape 1996: 320, Povolný & Verves 1997: 155; Krčmar et al. 2019: 124).
REMARKS: Rondani (1861g: 386) described Sarcophaga noverca from just the male sex, without specifying the number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, but presumably from more than one specimen because he wrote: “ non rara [not rare]”. In his redescription of Sarcophaga noverca Rondani (1862d: 107) specified the type locality: “ in collibus et montuosis agri parmensis [Parmese hills and mountains] … in Pedemontio [in Piedmont]”. Pape (1988: 11) designated a lectotype (♂) and reported (p. 12): “None of the five males standing under noverca in Rondani’s original collection (species N° 1009) is in agreement with the present concept of this species …, and to avoid both a change in identity of the well known noverca Rondani , and the creation of a new name for what would be noverca auctt., I have chosen to select a male from drawer C, standing at the label “ noverca ”, as lectotype ”. Pape (1988: 11) did not mention an additional male in the MSNC (this additional specimen is a paralectotype). A MZUF female numbered “1009” is not included in the type series because of its sex.
