Exorista achanthina Rondani, 1859 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 122 (key, as “ achanthina ”), 142 (description, as “ achanthina ”), 236 (as “ achantina ”).

TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but presumably it is Italy because the work deals with Italian species .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (missing mid-legs) ( MZUF: Box 13): Exorista Mgn / fractivena Rnd. / 646.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Ptesiomyia alacris ( Meigen, 1824) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 188) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 142) described Exorista achanthina from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length. In the same publication (1859b: 236) he used the name “ achantina ”. Acting as First Revisers (according to I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 24.2.1), we consider achantina as an incorrect original spelling. Herting (1975: 6) considered the female numbered “646” and labeled “ E. fractivena n.” (manuscript name)” as belonging to the type material because it fit Rondani’s description and because there was no female specimen of Exorista achanthina . We also found one syntype in this study. The MZUF also contains a male (non-type) numbered “647” (as E. acanthine ).
