ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 3.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ America meridion. [South America]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Aphritis a Phalacromya ): Volucella pectoralis Rnd., Amer. mer. [= South America] / M. Zool. N° 11213 / ♂; 1 ♀, syntype (covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Aphritis a Phalacromya ): ♀.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Copestylum pectorale ( Thompson et al. 1976: 81) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 3) described both sexes of Volucella pectoralis without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from V. Ghiliani. Costa (1866: 31) listed two MZUN specimens numbered “611”. We also found two syntypes in this study.
