Veprius presbiter Rondani, 1863 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 84.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ St. Jago [Santiago ( Chile)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tabanidei—Gen. Agelanius a Coenura ): Veprius presbiter Rnd., St. Jago / M. Zool. N° 10950 / Syn. Chaetopalpus corasinus ♂ (Phil.) , det. C.B. Philip [19]57.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Fairchild 1971: 5, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 33).
REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 84) described Veprius presbiter from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from R.A. Philippi. Rondani named this nominal species as “ presbiter ” in his description (p. 84) but as “ presbiler ” in his index (p. 98). We consider “ presbiler ” as an incorrect original spelling. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “901”. Philip (1965a: 121) and Fairchild (1971: 5) reported a single type specimen (♂) in the MZUN. We also found one syntype in this study.
