Pipiza varians Rondani, 1847 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1847d: 343.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Austria ” ( Fabricius 1805: 186) [type locality for Pipiza virens ( Fabricius, 1805) ].
TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Pipizella virens ( Fabricius, 1805) View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 91, Belcari et al. 1995a: 11); junior synonym of Pipizella maculipennis ( Meigen, 1822) ( Steenis & Lucas 2011: 156) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani (1847d: 343) considered Pipiza virens ( Fabricius, 1805) , Pipiza campestris ( Fallén, 1817) , Pipiza maculipennis ( Meigen, 1822) , Pipiza varipes ( Meigen, 1822) , Pipiza annulata (Macquart, 1829) and Pipiza morosa (Loew, 1840) as the same species but, instead of applying the Principle of Priority, he incorrectly proposed the substitute name Pipiza varians . Rondani (1857: 186) reaffirmed having proposed Pipiza varians to combine the above six nominal species plus Pipiza geniculata Curtis, 1835 . Pipiza varians was considered by Schiner (1864: 111), Verrall (1901: 23), Bezzi & Stein (1907: 8) and Kertész (1910: 11) as a synonym of Pipiza virens ( Fabricius, 1805) ; Bezzi (1892: 87, 1894: 287, 1900a: 92) and Bezzi & De Stefani-Perez (1897: 55) treated it as a valid species. The type material for Pipiza varians will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Pipiza virens . Steenis & Lucas (2011: 168) stated that there is no type of Pipiza virens in the ZMUC where the Fabrician collection is preserved. They incorrectly stated that J.A.W. Lucas designated a lectotype in the MNHN. Under the name Pipiza virens there are five specimens (non-types) in the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020). Michelsen (2017: 26) listed this nominal species among the Fabrician Diptera types in the ZMUC. Under the name Pipiza varians there are ten males and five females in the MZUF, one male and one female in the MSNC and one male and one female in the MZUB. Steenis & Lucas (2011: 156) incorrectly designated a MZUF male of Pipiza varians as the lectotype.
