ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1870a: 13 (key), 15 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ prope Vesuvium [near Vesuvius ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (MZUF: Box 32): Urophora Desv. / vulcanica, Neap. [= Naples] / 1682 / holotype Urophora vulcanica Rondani View in CoL , det. I.M. White, 1986 / Urophora stylata (Fabricius) View in CoL , det. I.M. White, 1986.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Foote 1984: 145); junior synonym of Urophora stylata (Linnaeus, 1758) View in CoL ( White & Korneyev 1989: 360, Norrbom et al. 1999: 243).

REMARKS: Rondani (1870a: 15) described Urophora vulcanica from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ semel mas captus a cl. Haliday [the male collected once by Mr. Haliday]”. White incorrectly labeled the single MZUF male as the holotype but White & Korneyev (1989: 361) considered it as a syntype. We also found one syntype in this study.

REMARKS: misidentification. Rondani (1870c: 128) incorrectly identified some specimens of Oxyna nebulosa (Wiedemann, 1817) as Oxyna cinerea Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 ( Hendel 1927: 167, Norrbom et al. 1999: 180).

[ Tripeta exacheta ] Rondani, 1870c: 111.

REMARKS: misidentification. Rondani (1870c: 111) incorrectly identified a specimen of Chaetoriella hestia Hering, 1937 as Tripeta hexachaeta Loew, 1862 (as Tripeta exacheta , p. 107 and 111, and as Tripeta exachetae , p. 111) ( White & Marquardt 1989: 476). Foote (1984: 78) listed “ exacheta ” Rondani as an incorrect subsequent spelling of “ hexachaeta ”. O’Hara et al. (2011: 209) considered the name Tripeta exacheta as available.
