Masicera achanthophora Rondani, 1861 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861e: 19 (key), 28 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Corsica [ Corsica (France)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype (missing right fore-leg) ( MZUF: Box 15): Masicera Macq. / achanthophora Rnd. / 755 / holotype Masicera acanthophora Rnd., B. Herting det.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Bithia acanthophora [sic!] ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 338, Cerretti 2010: 395); valid species, as Bithia acanthophora [sic!] ( O’Hara et al. 2020: 680).
REMARKS: Rondani (1861e: 28) described Masicera achanthophora from a single male: “ Marem unicum possiedo [I have a single male]” received from M. Spinola, treating it within the subgenus Ceromasia , which is now considered as a valid genus ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 50). The subsequent spelling “ acanthophora ” has been used ( Philip 1965a: 121, Fairchild 1971: 74, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 90) but it is not in prevailing usage ( Hunter 1901: 142, Kertész 1908: 265, O’Hara et al. 2011: 212). Bezzi & Stein (1907: 289), Herting (1969: 189), Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993: 338), Cerretti (2010: 395), and O’Hara et al. (2020: 680) used the spelling “ acanthophora ”; Brauer & Bergenstamm (1892: 316) and O’Hara et al. (2011: 50, 216) used the correct spelling “ achanthophora ”. The spelling “ acanthophora ” is an incorrect subsequent spelling. Herting (1969: 189) reported a single male in the MZUF.
