Masicera juvenilis Rondani, 1861

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861e: 18 (key), 25 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensi, et in planitiae [ Parmese hills and plains ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing left mid- and hind-legs), 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one missing left mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 14): Masicera Macq. / iuvenilis Rnd. / 748 .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Lydella grisescens Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 204).

REMARKS: Rondani (1861e: 25) described both sexes of Masicera juvenilis without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ Uterque sexus inventus [Collected both sexes]”, treating it within the subgenus Ceromasia Rondani, 1856 , which is now considered as a valid genus ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 50). We found three syntypes in this study. This nominal species was described as “ iuvenilis ”. The spelling “ iuvenilis ” was also used by O’Hara et al. (2011: 210) but other authors (Brauer-Bergenstamm 1891: 316, Meade 1892b: 129, Girschner 1899: 184, Bezzi & Stein 1907: 790, Herting 1984: 51, Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 204, Evenhuis & Pape 2020) spelled the name as “ juvenilis ”. The spelling “ juvenilis ” is in prevailing usage, and thus considered as correct (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 33.3.1).
