TYPE LOCALITY: Sweden, Uppsala .
DISTRIBUTION: W. Europe (excluding Iberia and Ireland) to Lake Baikal and Yenesei River ( U.S. S. R.).
COMMENT: Referred to as "chromosome type B", or "NF 40 karyospecies"; see Meylan and Hausser, 1978, Mammalia, 42:115- 122. See also comments under coronatus and granarius . Does not include gemellus; see Hausser, 1978, Mammalia, 42:329-341, who included gemellus in coronatus . Includes Blarina pyrrhonota Jentink, 1910 , which was assigned to Cryptotis surinamensis by Cabrera, 1958:47; however, Husson, 1963, Studies on the Fauna of Surinam and other Guyanas, 13:35-37, showed that the locality information was incorrect and that it is Sorex araneus .
