Lucaina discoidalis ; Green 1950: 15 (not Horn 1885) (in part, Arizona, California, Nevada records only). Arnett 1974: 2 (in part, some Texas and all Arizona records).
Lycaina discoidalis ; Leng 1920: 140 (in part, Arizona records only).
Diagnosis. Lucaina greeni can be identified among other Lucaina by the yellowish elytra with black coloration on the inner apical margins of the posterior 1/3 of the elytra and a black spot on the pronotal disc ( Fig. 5 View Figs ) OR the elytra completely bluish black ( Fig. 6 View Figs ) and the pronotum yellowish with a wide black longitudinal stripe. Additionally, males are distinguished by long erect pubescence on the femora ( Fig. 15 View Figs ), the genitalia rather fusiform and apex of median lobe lanceolate ( Fig. 20 View Figs ).
Description of Adult. Width across humeri 2.0–3.0 mm; elytral length 4.0–7.0 mm. Dorsal color yellowish with black coloration on inner margins of apical elytral 1/3 and pronotum with black spot on disc ( Fig. 5 View Figs ) OR elytra completely bluish black ( Fig. 6 View Figs ) and pronotum yellowish with wide black longitudinal stripe on pronotum. Head prolonged, rostrum elongate, coronal longitudinal sulci more or less prominent ( Fig. 17 View Figs ). Mandibles short, straight, not connate with elongate, posteriorly rounded labrum. Maxillary palpomere IV and labial palpomere III longer than wide. Antennae subserrate, slightly dorsoventrally flattened, inserted below eyes. Antennomere I subconical, elongate, as long as II+III, antennomere II about half length of I, antennomere III slightly shorter in length to I, broad, IV about 1/4 shorter than III, V subequal to IV, antennomeres VII–XI gradually decreasing in length. Pronotum as long as wide, margins slightly pronounced, thin, angles rounded, posterior lateral margins with pair of subtle oblique elevations. Male femora densely pubescent ventrally ( Fig. 15 View Figs ). Elytra subparallel, densely punctate, lateral margins stout, elytral costae indistinct, pubescence decumbent. Ventrite VII of females with broad, deep notch on apical region, apices quite rounded, not approximate, densely setose on apices ( Fig. 25 View Figs ). Male genitalia fusiform, with median lobe slightly shorter than parameres, apex apically narrowed, acuminate, ventral base of parameres longer, about 1/3 total length of parameres ( Fig. 20 View Figs ).
Biology. Lucaina greeni specimens were collected on mesquite flowers ( Prosopis ) ( Fig. 28 View Fig ) and Mimosa aculeaticarpa Ortega var. biuncifera (Bentham) (Fabaceae) , as well as on S. greggii and Fallugia paradoxa (D. Don) Enderlin (Rosaceae) .
Distribution. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas, USA and Sonora, Mexico ( Fig. 27 View Figs ). The Nevada record is from Green (1950), but we have seen no specimen to confirm it. The record is listed as “NEVADA: Dixie N.F.” Today, the Dixie National Forest is entirely in Utah, but USFS (2017) indicates that what is now the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, just west of Las Vegas, was once part of the Dixie National Forest. Therefore, we consider southern Nevada to be part of the distribution.
Etymology. This species is named in honor of the lycid taxonomist John Wagener Green.

Notes. This is the species that Green (1950) called L. discoidalis . In comparing material determined with Green’ s key to Horn’ s lectotype at the MCZC, we discovered the error which gave rise to this study. Although the color pattern as described by Horn is similar to Green’ s species, the rostral shape, male genitalia, and setae on the male femora are quite different between the two. Leng (1920) included an Arizona record for L. discoidalis , predating Green’ s (1950) mistake by three decades. We have found no source for Leng’ s Arizona record, and in absence of a voucher, must place that record here.
