Halobates micans Eschscholtz, 1822 View in CoL and Halobates splendens Witlaczil, 1886
Halobates micans View in CoL is the most widely distributed species of insect; it is found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and is the only member of the genus in the Atlantic Ocean ( Ikawa et al. 2012). It has been collected off the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica ( Ikawa et al. 2012: Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1–9 ), although we did not examine any specimens during this study. Similarly, we did not examine any specimens of H. splendens View in CoL , but despite being more common south of the equator, this species has been collected off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica ( Ikawa et al. 2012: Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1–9 ).
