Aedes tortilis (Theobald, 1903) View in CoL
Breeding in isolated temporary pools at all elevations, A. tortilis is a common nuisance mosquito in the Caribbean Islands. On St. Thomas, we found larvae in pooled water in wheel ruts in the dirt tracks near Bolongo pond (with larval Culex erraticus ), in pools on Abi Beach, between the mangroves and the seashore, and were attacked by adults while collecting there and along the various ghuts and mangroves. Previous records from the Virgin Islands come from Stone (1969) (‘Virgin Islands’) Belkin et al. (1965, 1970) (‘Virgin Islands’, St. Thomas).
