Type Locality: Guatemala, Alta Verapaz Dept., Cobán.

Vernacular Names: Short-tailed Singing Mouse.

Synonyms: Scotinomys apricus ( Bangs 1902) ; Scotinomys cacabatus Goodwin 1945 ; Scotinomys endersi Goodwin 1946 ; Scotinomys episcopi Enders and Pearson 1939 ; Scotinomys escazuensis Goodwin 1945 ; Scotinomys garichensis Enders and Pearson 1939 ; Scotinomys irazu (J. A Allen 1904) ; Scotinomys leridensis Enders and Pearson 1939 ; Scotinomys rufoniger Sanborn 1935 ; Scotinomys stenopygius Buchanan and Howell 1967 ; Scotinomys subnubilis Goldman 1935 .

Distribution: Intermediate elevations of Middle America from E Oaxaca, México, to W Panamá.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Level of differentiation and status of populations north ( teguina ) and south ( irazu ) of the Nicaraguan Depression merit reconsideration. Hooper (1972) recognized four subspecies.
