Bakeriella cristata Evans 1964: 118 (list), 119 (key), 126–128 (♂ description); Evans 1973: 200 –201 (additional material); Evans 1979: 257 (list), 259, 260 (key), 266 (comment); De Santis, 1980: 332 (catalog); Gordh & Móczár 1990: 70 (catalog); Azevedo 1991b: 536 –537 (additional material); 537 (figs 4–6); Azevedo 1994: 146 (comment), 149 (key); Kawada & Azevedo 2003: 466 (figs 35, 36); 467 (additional material); Azevedo et al. 2005: 168, 170, 172 (comparison).
cristata [lapsus calami]: Evans & Fullerton 1997: 178 (comparison).
Material examined. Holotype ♂: BOL[IVIA], [Santa Cruz], Cuatro Ojos , XI.1911, Steinbach col., Carn. Mus. Acc 5074 ( CMNH). New material: BRAZIL: Amazonas, 1 ♂, Manaus Puraquequara, 11.XII.1998, Arm[adilha] Möricke, J.F.Vidal col. ( INPA); ARGENTINA, 1 ♂, Tucumán, between Choromoto + Higuera, 900m, sweep, 19.I.1999, J.M. Sharkey col. ( CNCI).
Diagnosis. MALE ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 14 – 24. 14 – 16 ). Black. Mandible with two apical teeth ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 14 – 24. 14 – 16 ). Clypeus with broadly subrounded median lobe. Antennal scrobe not carinate. Frons coriaceous. Vertex slightly convex. Pronotal disc with anterior corner angulate and produced; anterior carina thick and sharp; median carina weak, absent on posterior third of disc; lateral margin not carinate; posterior margin paralleled by some punctures; side of disc with ventral margin not carinate. Scutellar pit subrounded. Mesopleuron with subtegular groove wide anteriorly; anterior fovea elliptical; upper fovea subrounded; lower fovea with upper margin mostly absent ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 14 – 24. 14 – 16 ). Genitalia ( Figs 23, 24 View FIGURES 14 – 24. 14 – 16 ): paramere very unusual, sinuous, base very narrow, inserted into basiparamere on inner corner of dorsal side, apex sharp; cuspis elongate, its apex almost aligned with paramere apex; digitus apex aligned with cuspis apex; aedeagus wide, apical half little narrower than basal half, short, only 0.64 × as long as genitalia length, without constricted between apical and basal halves; ventral surface with small projection ventrad; base of apodeme not dilated. FEMALE unknown.
Distribution. Brazil (Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina), Bolivia, Argentina (Salta, Misiones), * Argentina (Tucumán).
Variation. One specimen from Tucuman with median pronotal carina short and very weak.
Remarks. The aedeagus is wide and short as most of species of Epyris . Evans (1973) identified 1 ♀ of Bakeriella from Brazil (Santa Catarina, Nova Teutônia) as B. cristata stating that it is like the male. It has the scutellar pits elliptical and separated by a broad, flat-topped ridge; the pronotum with the median carina weakly developed on the posterior third, otherwise absent; and the mandibles with two large apical teeth.
Evans (1973) speculated the possibility of 1 ♀ from Santa Catarina ( Brazil) to be B. cristata , because of the separated elliptical scutellar pits and the dark green metallic frons. However he did not indicated the repository and I was not able to locate this female.
