scientific name

Gossypium hirsutum L.
status

Gossypium hirsutum Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 2: 975. 1763.

"Habitat in America." RCN: 5076.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 874.4 ( LINN) .

Current name: Gossypium hirsutum L. View in CoL ( Malvaceae ).

Note: Watt (Wild Cult. Cotton Pl. World: 184, pl. 29. 1907) indicated a Miller collection in Herb. Sloane 294: 45 ( BM-SL) as the type, but this was never studied by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. It cannot be treated as a neotype because 874.4 (LINN) appears to be original material. Fryxell (in Brittonia 20: 382. 1968) regarded Miller’s cited description as the protologue but this is contrary to Art. 8.1.
