Genus Petrolina Barbosa & Mello-Patiu gen. nov.
Type species: Petrolina bifasciata sp. nov., by present designation.
( Figs 1–16 View FIGURES 1–5 View FIGURES 6–9 View FIGURES 10–16 )
Diagnosis. Differs from other Neotropical genera of Sarcophaginae by its peculiar coloration with only two black stripes dorsally on thorax ( Fig 11 View FIGURES 10–16 ). Phallus with vesica reduced to a small plaque ( Fig 8 View FIGURES 6–9 ); juxta long, with two sclerotized and broadly separated projections, which are united at the membranous base ( Fig 9 View FIGURES 6–9 ); median and lateral stylus exposed and free at apex of phallus ( Figs 14 and 15 View FIGURES 10–16 ); median stylus very long, exceeding length of juxta and presenting the distal part in the form of an arrowhead ( Figs 14 and 15 View FIGURES 10–16 ); lateral stylus with base folded laterally and facing dorsal part of phallus, covering base of juxta in dorsal view ( Figs 7 and 9 View FIGURES 6–9 ).
Etymology. The name of the genus was chosen as a tribute to the municipality of Petrolina , where the holotype was collected. The species epithet refers to the presence of two black stripes on the grey thorax, which is the distinguishing feature of the adult. This character so far differentiates the genus and the species from all other taxa within the subfamily Sarcophaginae .
