Canthidium (Canthidium) trinodosum ( Boheman, 1858)

Onthophagus trinodosus Boheman, 1858: 46 [transferred to Canthidium by Harold 1867b: 88; here transferred to the subgenus Canthidium ]. Type locality: Brazil: Rio de Janeiro (“Brasilia (Rio Janeiro)”). Type material: Unknown number of syntypes ( NHRS). Distribution: Brazil (Martínez & Halffter 1986a).

Onthophagus subarmatus Harold, 1862: 403 [replacement name for Onthophagus trinodosus Boheman, 1858 due to the primary homonomy with O. trinodosus Fåhraeus, 1857 , with the latter currently valid in the original combination for an African species. Harold (1867b: 88) revalidated O. trinodosus Boheman, 1858 despite it being a junior primary homonym with the justification that the two homonyms were no longer considered congenerics. The current Code does not allow such an interpretation and, in principle, O. trinodosus Boheman should have been deemed permanently invalid and put aside in favour of a substitutive name. However, since this name has been in use since 1867 and was not placed in the same genus as its senior homonym after 1899, Article 23.9.5 must be invoked and the case referred to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. In the meantime, prevailing usage should be maintained].

Canthidium difficile Harold, 1867a: 50 [synonymized by Harold 1867b: 88]. Type locality: Brazil (“ Brasilien ”). Type material: Unknown number of syntypes (MNHN—ex Harold collection; ZSMC).

Canthidium politum Harold, 1867a: 49 [synonymized by Gillet 1911: 56]. Type locality: Brazil (“ Brasilien ”). Type material: Location of syntypes unknown (possibly at MNHN—ex Harold collection).
