The pod of the species is clavate and very special within the genus. Cui et al. (1987) published this species and thought it was similar to H. leptopus . In our study, H. menglaense (C.Chen & X.J.Cui in Cui et al. 1987: 305) H.Ohashi & R.R.Mill (2000: 180) formed a clade with the H. laxum group species only in the cpDNA tree but with weak support value (only PP = 0.57). The ITS tree and combined ITS and cpDNA tree suggested that H. menglaense was a sister to the clade containing the H. laxum group and H. podocarpum group with only weak statistical support. From the molecular data we obtained, the systematic position of H. menglaense cannot be determined. Further molecular work and morphological research are required to gain a better understanding of this species.
