Diagnosis
Colonies arborescent, usually planiform. Axis with cross-chambered central core. Coenenchyme moderately to very thick, with circle of longitudinal canals surrounding axis. Calyces prominent, shelf-like or tubular, with projecting spindles, longitudinally arranged. Outer coenenchymal and calyx spindles usually with outer or terminal spines. Axial sheath with capstans, spindles, or oval bodies, never purple in colour ( Marques and Castro 1995: 162).
