Generitype: Graeff, Kociolek & S.R. Rushforth, Williamsella angusta sp. nov.

Valve linear, narrow, central sternum very narrow, becoming slightly wider towards the center, but without a central area. Striae are opposite, irregularly punctate, more or less parallel. Areolae are occluded with a round covering externally. A pore field is present at both apices. A single rimoportula is present at one end of the valve. Spines lacking, colonies not observed.

Etymology:—Named for Dr. David M. Williams, of the Natural History Museum, London, for his many contributions to the discipline of Systematic Biology and the study of diatoms, particularly those pennate diatoms lacking a raphe system.
