Diagnosis (adapted after Martens 2001)

Carapace (0.7–3.5 mm), mostly elongated and laterally compressed; marginal valve structures mostly well developed; branched pore canals and marginal septa present in some genera. Most (all?) genera with conical inclusions in the valves, visible with transmitted light as small extra pores. Anterior calcified lamella wider than posterior one; pore canals mostly branched along ventral margin, simple and straight along anterior and posterior margins; false pore canals (remnants of fused selvage) present in some genera; selvage present or absent.

A 1 in some genera with large Rome organs. A 2 in males with claw GM (5 the largest claw on the terminal segment of the A2) developed into a comb-like structure, with one row of strong teeth. Caudal rami well developed, symmetrical or asymmetrical; attachment of caudal ramus with a triangular basal reinforcement (in some genera only weakly developed). Hemipenis with large and sclerotized bladder-like part ‘‘c’’ of the labyrinth, post-labyrinthal internal spermiduct with up to six additional whorls.
